Introduction
In this article, I will showcase my own personal Onryo Build for Dead By Daylight in 2023 (Version 7.1.1). I have had an exceptionally good time with this build however, feel free to add to/change anything on the build to better fit your own playstyle and needs. By the end of this article, you should be able to play as The Onryo DBD at a very high level.
The Onryo DBD
The Onryo is a killer in Dead By Daylight that was originally released in Chapter 23: Sadako Rising on the 8th of March 2022. On release, she fell into obscurity quickly due to being perceived as a weak basic killer, however, with the recent update in patch 7.1.0 (which came with the release of Nicholas Cage) she received a large buff to her power.
The Onryos Abilities/powers are as follows:
Manifestation/Demanifestation: While de-manifested The Onryo gains the Undetectable status effect which makes her have no terror radius. She also is invisible to survivors unless they are within a 24-meter radius causing her to appear as a blur that phases in and out. While de-manifested she emits a loudish noise that can be heard by survivors so she is not as sneaky as a killer such as The Ghostface but she is still sneakier than most killers. Also while de-manifested The Onryo cannot be hit by pallet stuns and cannot attack. To manifest takes a couple of seconds and once manifested you regain your terror radius and are essentially the same as any other killer and can attack, be stunned, etc.
Projection: While de-manifested The Onryo can teleport to a number of TV’s around the map which are highlighted white, upon teleporting the TV is turned off for 45 seconds. Projection has a cooldown of 10 seconds. Every time you Project all survivors who are not carrying a tape gain 3/4 of a stack of Condemned.
Condemned: Condemned is Onryo’s secondary objective and if a survivor gains 7 stacks of Condemned they are instantly Mori-able (killable) once downed regardless of their current hook stage. Surviours gain/lose condemned as follows:
Survivors gain condemned every time The Onryo projects to a TV unless they are holding a tape (3/4 of a stack per projection)
If a Survivor is hit by the Onryo while holding a tape they gain 2 stacks of Condemned (the tape is also destroyed upon a successful hit)
If a survivor retrieves a tape from a TV and successfully puts it away in another they lose 3 Condemned stacks
The Build (Onryo DBD)
So the build for the Onryo DBD is as follows. Perks: Sloppy Butcher, Jolt, Deadlock, and Hex: No One Escapes Death.
Sloppy butcher is applied when you hit the survivor and increases the time required to heal by 25 percent and also causes the healing progress bar to deplete while the survivor is not actively being healed. This means that if you can interrupt the survivors healing, the healing progress bar will quickly reset back to 0 and cause the survivors to waste time. It also will oftentimes cause survivors to not bother healing allowing you to get quick downs for Jolt and Condemned moris.
Jolt activates when you down a survivor causing all generators within 32 meters to explode resulting in an instant 8 percent hit to the current generator progress as well as causing the generator to begin regressing. This is a great generator regression perk as it applies automatically without you having to waste time kicking generators and has no cooldown.
Deadlock applies when a generator is completed and it causes the generator with the most progress to be blocked for 30 seconds. This stops generators from being popped at the same time and is especially good at stopping early-game generator pops. This perk activates all on its own (just like jolt) meaning you save a lot of time.
Hex: No One Escapes Death (NOED for short) activates when all generators are completed and it turns a random dull totem into a hex totem. While the hex totem is active it allows you to instantly down survivors and speeds the killer up by 4 percent. This is a last-resort perk if the game doesn’t go well and should allow you to secure a few kills in the endgame.
For add-ons, you will want to run Iridescent Videotape (Ultra rare) and Mother’s Comb (Rare)
The Iridescent Videotape add-on makes it so that survivors must put their tape in a specific TV which means they have to haul themselves across the map giving you ample opportunity to intercept and injure/down them.
The Mothers Comb add-on makes it so that you will receive a notification whenever a TV is turned off and allows you to see the yellow aura of TVs that have been turned off. This allows you to know when and where a survivor gets a tape from so you can approach the survivor and hit them before they can put it up. This is incredibly strong when paired with the Iridescent Videotape as they will have to run across the map and you will know exactly where the survivor is.
Onryo DBD Killer Strategy
So with this build the strategy is as follows. You want to juggle survivors while teleporting to TVs as much as possible to build up Condemned stacks. If you get a notification due to a survivor picking up a tape (thanks to the Mothers Comb add-on) you want to head over there and hit them to destroy their tape and apply an instant 2 stacks of condemned. Destroying the survivor’s tape by hitting them will allow them to once again gain Condemned by your teleporting, which forces them to pick up a tape, which gives you a notification as to where they are to injure them and rinse and repeat. Playing like this gives you huge map pressure and generator slowdown as survivors need to constantly try to deposit tapes to remove Condemned stacks meaning they aren’t on generators giving you very effective generator slowdown. With sloppy butcher, survivors are less likely to heal allowing you to catch them off guard via porting/de-manifesting while they are working on generators, down them to cause instant gen regression via the Jolt perk, and get an easy hook. By constantly hooking and applying Condemned stacks to survivors they are in a constant battle for survival as you have 2 ways to get the kill. Once a survivor is fully Condemned and they are Mori-able you will receive a heartbeat notification to their location, you want to track them, down them, and mori them as quickly as possible before they remove their stacks via a tape. If you are struggling to down a fully Condemned survivor you might want to try teleporting to a nearby TV and catching them from an angle they don’t suspect for example by teleporting in front of them.
Conclusion And Links To More Onryo Content
The recent Onryo buff has allowed her to become a very fun killer. She is able to easily stomp solo Q’ed survivors and stands a decent chance even against organized survive with friend groups.
